Waste-to-Value
Waste biomass (food processing residue, forest slash, sawdust, animal bedding, municipal solid sludge …), or waste plastics or tire rubber, among others, tend to pile up when they seemingly serve no useful purpose, or if their disposal is expensive or polluting. CDS offers the optimal solution to this problem, turning liabilities into assets of renewable energy and Carbon Black or biochar.
System owners enjoy a turnkey, integrated solution that is easy to operate, affordable and profitable — often paying for itself within 2-3 years, but with a useful life of at least 15 years.
PRODUCTS from system operation: 1) Biochar or Recovered Carbon Black, 2) renewable energy as any combination of syngas, pyrolysis oil and heat (which can be further converted into electricity, ASTM-standard liquid fuels or used directly), and 3) Fertilizer or other co-products depending on the feedstock (such as steel from tires).
Biochar can be used to improve soil productivity, boosting the health of everything that grows, eliminating pollution, drawing down atmospheric CO2 and safely sequestering it in the ground. There are dozens of additional uses.
Fertilizer can be captured in various forms, including shelf-stable liquid and Certified Organic fertilizers, depending on feedstocks, process steps and the facility itself. When capturing poultry or dairy industry wastes, for example, or sludges (municipal solid sludge), there are available nutrients that can be “recycled” into hygienic products, free of harmful microbes, much sought-after in agriculture production or soil regeneration.
Recovered Carbon Black (rCB) that conforms with established ASTM standards replaces fossil inputs for making rubber and other products without generating pollution in the making. rCB is a growing opportunity within the tire, paint and polymer industries. See also activated carbon.
